Mohawk powwow fundraiser attracts big name comedian
MONTREAL, June 20, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Wanda Sykes is coming to town!
The Kanehsatake traditional Powwow has signed up the hilarious comedian to an August 11 fundraising show, and everyone is encouraged to join!
But hurry, tickets will sell-out!
"We are looking at unique ways to keep our powwow running, and what better way than to make people laugh?" said Powwow Director Mark Bonspille.
"We also want to help other programs in Kanehsatake so your support is very much appreciated."
The outdoor comedic event, which serves as a different means to help preserve the Mohawk way of life, will be held at 664 Ste. Philomene (Route 344) August 11. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
"There are so many underfunded programs here in Kanehsatake and I feel if we can organize larger events like this, we can not only keep the powwow going, we can help with things like summer programs and the local schools," said Bonspille.
The powwow in Kanehsatake, which originated as a means to bring people together after the 1990 Oka Crisis, has been re-launched twice, with the latest rendition held in late August every year.
"We're not only trying to bring a big name to Kanehsatake to help the powwow and other programs to keep going, we're hoping it helps to mend relationships and form new ones between our people and non-Natives who want to know more about us and our rich culture," said Bonspille.
