Moncton's The Humanity Project awarded $50,000 Prize through the goeasy Community Project
New industrial cooking equipment will help serve 4,500 community members a month
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 3, 2016 /CNW/ - Moncton, New Brunswick charity The Humanity Project, has won $50,000 through the goeasy Community Project to meet the growing demand for nutritious meals for the city's working poor and homeless. The funds will be used to purchase and install industrial cooking equipment and ingredients to continue feeding more than 4,500 Moncton-area residents every month.
This was the first year that goeasy Ltd. (TSX:GSY), ("goeasy" or the "Company"), a leading full-service provider of goods and alternative financial services that improve the lives of everyday Canadians, ran the goeasy Community Project. The program was developed to help support those looking to create change in their own backyards by nominating local projects for the chance to win $50,000 towards their project.
The winning project was one of more than 70 entries from across Canada and was selected as one of the top three finalists for a public voting process to receive the $50,000 in funding. The Humanity Project succeeded in mobilizing local support through their tight knit community and social media channels to win a Canada-wide voting process. Public participation was widespread, as Canadians rallied behind the three finalist projects with votes of support coming in from across all regions in Canada.
"Our mission is to end homelessness one person at a time. We are doing amazing with what we have making sure that our homeless and our working poor are being fed on a daily basis, but there is so much more we can be doing," said Shelley Butler, Communications Lead for The Humanity Project. "With $50,000 in new funding from goeasy, we can dramatically improve our kitchen and the number of people we can help. What goeasy has helped us to do is amazing. This is going to be a life changing thing for our community."
"The number of communities and Canadians that got behind this program was overwhelming and it was an extremely close race amongst the three finalists. In the end, the story of the Humanity Project and the people behind it really captured the hearts of Canadians and had the most votes," said Andrea Fiederer, Chief Marketing Officer at goeasy. "The Humanity Project is a volunteer-led organization that really demonstrates the impact of grassroots engagement. We know the people behind the project and the community of Moncton will benefit tremendously from the $50,000 that they will be awarded from goeasy."
The installation and renovation of The Humanity Project's kitchen will be documented in a video production that will be promoted nationally by goeasy in October, providing further profile for this worthy local project.
