In the last 20 years, Money Mentors has accomplished several achievements, including: helping over 250,000 Albertans become debt free and financially empowered, donating over $100,000 back to communities across the province, and winning the Consumers Choice Award for Credit and Debt Counselling Services from 2012-2017.
Each month, our team answers 2,400 phone calls and holds 1,900 appointments. We disburse $1.5 million to creditors each month, helping men and women tackle their financial struggles head on.
Looking toward the future
"Our determination to provide personal financial services has received countless support from schools, government institutions, corporations and hundreds of Albertans across the province," said Jim Thorne, Executive Director, and Money Mentors employee since day one.
"Our goal is to continue doing what we are doing and to be here for Albertans, to add depth to our services and ensure we offer the highest quality services to our clients."
The not-for-profits' services, along with the Orderly Payment of Debts (OPD) program, have been very successful – with clients returning more than $200 million to their creditors since establishment in 1997.
From credit counselling and money coaching to retirement planning and community financial literacy, Money Mentors is creating a healthier financial future for the entire province.
While thrilled with the success, Money Mentors knows there are many more Albertans who need help managing their everyday finances.
After 20 years of operation, we are committed to helping Albertans get a handle on their money, and share the debt-free feeling that can only be described as indescribable.
"From desperation to joy is a pretty amazing journey," said Lyndon (past client of Money Mentors), who paid off over $16,000 of debt through the OPD program.
And that's what it's all about. Turning a situation that seems impossible, into an accomplishment and a success for clients to move forward with.
Financial literacy focused
"Guided by principles such as compassion, integrity, and honesty, Money Mentors has become known as the most trusted name in debt management, credit counselling and financial education in Alberta," said Shawn Graham, Chair of the Board of Directors for Money Mentors.
At Money Mentors, we believe Alberta youth should learn the fundamentals of personal finance, as this will help them to develop and strengthen their money management skills and concepts. Additionally, knowing the basics of personal finance at a young age instills confidence and empowerment, enabling one to handle his or her money much better as they grow and climb the pay scale.
This year, we are launching a new website that supports this initiative, in hopes that we can reach more classrooms and families looking to increase their children's knowledge and financial tool belt.
