Money Mentors Inspires Albertans During Financial Literacy Month

CALGARY and EDMONTON, Nov. 10, 2014 /CNW/ - Albertans will have the opportunity to be inspired and motivated personally and financially this November in celebration of Financial Literacy Month.

"We had such success in bringing awareness to financial literacy to Albertans last year that we just had to take part once again," says Jim Thorne, Executive Director of Money Mentors, an Alberta-based not-for-profit debt and credit counselling agency. "Alberta has so much to offer and financial literacy is an important part of ensuring Albertans are able to maximize their opportunities and be prepared for possible setbacks."

Led by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), Financial Literacy Month is held each November to highlight the importance of financial literacy and help Canadians of all ages enhance their financial know-how.

Money Mentors will offer the following free events, courses and tools to all Albertans throughout November:

• Inspirational Speakers: Olympic hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser, FCAC Commissioner Lucie Tedesco and financial literacy leader Jane Rooney will be in Edmonton on Nov. 19 and Calgary on Nov. 25 to inspire Albertans to unlock their full potential both financially and personally. • Educating Youth: Money Mentors will once again go to over 100 classrooms giving fun and interactive presentations on saving, budgeting, spending plans, credit and debt to Elementary schools, high schools and community youth organizations across the province.
• Free Courses: On November 12 Money Mentors will offer Tackle Debt, a free one-hour course, in all six of its locations to help Albertans find ways to become debt-free. A number of different free online courses on financial literacy will also be available on the Money Mentors website.
• Free Tools: Download a free Personal Finances binder from the Money Mentors site to help organize all aspects of everyday money management.
