Represents the participants' work and deliberations at the 2012 International Summit of Cooperatives
LÉVIS, QC, Nov. 20, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Monique F. Leroux, Chair of the Board, President and CEO of Desjardins Group, was in New York City today with Dame Pauline Green, President of the International Co-operative Alliance, to officially present the Declaration of the 2012 International Summit of Cooperatives to the United Nations (UN). The Declaration was adopted at the Summit, which was held in Quebec City.
"I am very proud of Desjardins Group's contribution as co-host of the International Summit of Cooperatives. The Declaration testifies to the strength, resilience and importance of cooperatives in our economies. After presenting the Declaration at the International Co-operative Alliance's General Assembly in Manchester at the end of October, I am pleased to now be presenting it at the UN," stated Ms. Leroux.
Adopted by the three Summit co-hosts—the International Co-operative Alliance, Saint Mary's University and Desjardins Group—and then enriched by the aspirations of the participants, the Declaration acknowledges "the important contribution that cooperatives make to the socio-economic well-being of people and communities" and identifies the main business challenges facing the worldwide cooperative movement.
Declared the International Year of Cooperatives by the United Nations, this year that is quickly coming to an end has been an opportunity to promote the cooperative model. And Ms. Leroux is pleased to be closing the loop by presenting the UN with a Declaration that will further contribute to the development of cooperatives around the world in a meaningful way.
