Montclair Natural Spring Water, Canada's oldest water brand, now comes
packaged in 100% recycled plastic
New product will be available at selected retailers and restaurants
TOWNSHIP OF PUSLINCH, ON and HOPE, BC, April 6 /CNW/ - Nestlé Waters Canada, the country's marketshare-leading manufacturer and distributor of healthy beverage choices, today re-introduced Montclair Natural Spring Water, Canada's oldest bottled water brand, in a bottle made of 100 percent recycled plastic.
Montclair Natural Spring Water is being manufactured in its new packaging format at the Company's bottling plants in the Township of Puslinch, Ontario, and Hope, British Columbia. The water comes from high-quality, naturally-protected, deep spring sources using sustainable practices.
Sealed in tamper-evident packaging, the new Montclair Natural Spring Water bottle is made from 100 percent recycled PET, reflecting a full-circle use of plastic beverage containers.
"This is a great example of recycling in action," said Gail Cosman, President, Nestlé Waters Canada. "After the empty bottle is captured in the recycling system, it is sorted, baled, washed, sterilized and reformed into raw PET material from which new PET beverage containers can be made.
"Consumers can reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing Montclair Natural Spring Water packaged in 100 percent recycled PET," explains Ms. Cosman. "They can further reduce their carbon footprint by 25 percent by simply placing their empty Montclair Natural Spring Water bottle in a recycling bin, where it will be used again to make another plastic beverage container."
When recycled, all PET packaging can become a plastic beverage container again or carpeting, automotive parts, toys or clothing, for example. It takes about 14 plastic beverage containers to make one large t-shirt.
"With about 72 percent of Canadians drinking bottled water today, using recycled plastic is an innovative and effective way to reduce our collective carbon footprint," added Ms. Cosman. "Each Montclair bottle serves as an education vehicle to inform consumers about the importance of recycling and demonstrate that recycled plastic can be reused repeatedly to create new consumer products."
Nestlé Waters Canada and its industry partners currently participate in funding Canada's municipal recycling infrastructure across the country - infrastructure that also collects glass, paper and aluminum. The Company and its industry partners introduced Canada's first public spaces recycling program in Quebec in 2008; recently completed a successful pilot program in Sarnia, Ontario; and introduced the most comprehensive recycling program in North America in the province of Manitoba earlier this month.
About 64 percent of plastic beverage containers were diverted from landfill across Canada in 2008, according to the provincial stewards responsible. The pilot public spaces recycling program in Quebec captured 80+ percent of recyclables, compared to 77 and 84 percent for the two phases of the Ontario pilot program in Sarnia.
Nestlé Waters Canada communicates the recycling capability of its packaging and the importance of recycling on its product labels, on its product cases, in its advertising and on its web site.
In addition to deploying recycled plastic and reducing plastic in its bottles, Nestlé Waters Canada continually reviews its secondary packaging materials for reduction opportunities. The Company has eliminated cardboard side walls from the majority of its 24-packs of bottled water, its number-one seller. The corrugate used by the Company in its packaging is made of recycled cardboard.
Nestlé Waters Canada also continues to make progress toward its goals of reducing its carbon footprint on additional fronts, including:
- It manufactures its own bottles at each of its bottling facilities, saving the energy required to ship truckloads of empty bottles into its plants. This avoids the need to truck 20,000 trailer loads of empty plastic bottles per year and saves 12,000,000 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions annually; - In addition to the Montclair Natural Spring Water bottle made of 100 percent recycled plastic, the Company is producing its Nestlé Pure Life Natural Spring Water in one of the lightest plastic beverage containers in the market - 9.16 grams; - More than 80 percent of its products are shipped directly from its plants to retailers; - The average shipping distance for bottled water is 250 kilometres from source to shelf. That compares to 2,400 to 3,200 kilometres for fresh fruit and vegetables and most consumer packaged goods sold through grocers, according to Dan Murphy, an agricultural consultant from Washington state; - It is using hydrogen fuel cell forklifts and hybrid sales vehicles; - Its $15 million warehouse expansion at its Puslinch distribution centre in 2009 has reduced the number of trucks traveling to and from that facility by 1,500 per year; - It has continuously reduced the size of its paper labels since 1998 - the current label is 35 percent smaller than the previous one. To date, this has resulted in a savings of about 20 million pounds of paper; - It has reduced corrugate use by 88,000 tons over the last five years, which is equivalent to saving 528,000 trees. Another 15 percent reduction took place in 2009.
