Montréal and its convention centre chosen to host prestigious World Congress
of Political Science in 2014

MONTREAL, Nov. 23, 2010 /CNW Telbec/ - The Palais des congrès de Montréal and the International Political Science Association are proud to announce Montréal will host the 23^rd World Congress of Political Science July 19 to 25, 2014. The event, which is expected to draw 3,500 delegates from more than 80 countries as well as 50 exhibitors, will generate over $8 million in economic spinoffs for the city.

According to the IPSA's Secretary General, Professor Guy Lachapelle, the selection of Montréal fully reflects the city's dynamic intellectual climate, and especially the vitality of the political science community in Québec and Canada: "I am particularly proud of the IPSA Executive Committee's decision during their last meeting in Madrid to choose Montréal to re-host the World Congress of Political Science for a second time, after 1973. This speaks to both the quality of the bid and the fact that Montréal has become an international hot spot of political scientific activity." In fact, in 2006, the International Political Science Association chose to permanently headquarter its Secretariat at Concordia University, with the help of Montréal International.

The International Political Science Association was founded in Paris in 1949. Today it groups together 52 national and regional political science associations, making it the world's largest network of political scientists. It has held congresses in Québec City (2000), in Durban, South Africa (2003), in Fukuoka, Japan (2006) and in Santiago, Chile (2009). It will hold its next congress in Madrid in July 2012. The theme will be "Reordering Power, Shifting Boundaries," and the co-winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Economics, political scientist Elinor Ostrom, will be in attendance.
