TORONTO, March 19, 2013 /CNW/ - In Monday night's season three premiere of Top Chef Canada on Food Network Canada, 16 of Canada's hottest chefs faced-off for the first time in the country's most aggressive food competition series.  A Top Chef Canada version of his mom's honey and mustard chicken, described as "angry home cooking" by head judge chef Mark McEwan, sends Montreal chef Fred Boucher home by the end of the first episode.  Coming out on top in the episode is Vancouver's Matthew Stowe with his take on his mother's roast chicken, which McEwan said "worked on every note." The new season of Top Chef Canada airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT on Food Network Canada.

Monday night's Quickfire Challenge tested the chefs' technical skills while the Elimination Challenge saw each chef make a Top Chef Canada version of the dish that inspired them to be a chef. Food Network Canada's Chuck Hughes (Chuck's Week Off), of Montreal's Le Bremner and Garde Manger, joined as guest judge. Hughes described Newfoundland's Chris Chafe's dish of breaded cod cake with gnocchi as "almost offensive" while McEwan praised Toronto's (originally from Medicine Hat) Becky Ross' deconstructed lemon meringue as "Top Chef quality."

"It would be nice to make friends on Top Chef Canada, but I already have friends. This is a competition," says Nicole Gomes, a Calgary competitor.

In a sneak peek of next week's episode on Mon., March 25 at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT, the chefs make a dish for Survivorman's Les Stroud using MRE's (Meal Ready to Eat). As Stroud himself puts it, "If I had the choice between scorpions and an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), I would choose a bucket of scorpions." Later chef Robert Irvine (Restaurant: Impossible) serves as guest judge in the Elimination Challenge that sees the chefs hunt for ingredients during a scavenger hunt at Toronto's Riverdale Farm.
