Montreal selected to host the 2017 International Orchestra Conference
MONTREAL, April 9, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Quebec Musicians' Guild (GMMQ) is proud to announce that Montreal has been chosen to host the 4th edition of the International Orchestra Conference (FIM IOC) to be held in 2017.
The International Orchestra Conference is an international event organized every three years by the International Federation of Musicians (IFM). During three days, over 250 delegates (musicians, conductors, experts, orchestra directors, musicians' unions, etc.) come together and attend workshops to exchange notes on various common issues related to orchestra operations around the world.
Last February, Ms. Mylène Cyr, Executive Director of the GMMQ, travelled to Norway during the 3rd International Orchestra Conference in order to officially submit Montreal's candidacy to host the 2017 Conference. In view of its leading role in the operation of orchestras throughout Québec and its privileged relationships with both musicians and orchestra administrations, the Guild was considered to be the most qualified organization to submit the candidacy of Montreal as the host city for the 2017 FIM International Orchestra Conference (FIM IOC).
"An important gateway between Europe and America, Québec has an exceptional cultural vitality that includes numerous symphony orchestras such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and the Orchestre Métropolitain, as well as more than twenty regional and chamber orchestras of the highest caliber. It is with great enthusiasm that we will welcome to Montreal the 4th edition of the International Orchestra Conference, which will be held in North America for the very first time", declared Mylène Cyr.
"It will be exciting to meet with artists and orchestra administrators from all over the world to exchange notes on problems we have in common and discuss various solutions to improving, among other things, the working conditions of professional musicians", noted Luc Fortin, President of the Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec.
The Guild received substantial political support at every level of government for this project. Cultural and musical organizations, such as Tourisme Montréal, the Society for the celebration of Montréal's 375th anniversary, JPdL International, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Métropolitain and Culture Montréal, also supported the candidacy of Montreal.
"We are delighted that Montreal was chosen as the first host city in North America of this prestigious musical event. What a great occasion to show musicians around the world the talent and creativity that that makes Montreal so dynamic", added Yves Lalumière, CEO of Tourisme Montréal.
The 2017 International Orchestra Conference will be a major cultural event that that not only marks the 375th anniversary of the founding of Montreal but also the culmination of the city's ten-year action plan Montréal Métropole Culturelle, one of whose main priorities is to promote Montreal to the rest of Québec, Canada and the World.
