Montréal Space for Life Rockets You into a New Universe - Starting April 6, 2013 at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium Français
MONTREAL, Jan. 23, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - There was tremendous excitement in the air today, as the Executive Director of Space for Life started the final countdown before the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium opens to the public on April 6. This eagerly awaited event will make Montréal Space for Life Canada's largest natural science museum complex and a key destination on everyone's list.
"The opening of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium is a milestone in the development of Space for Life, which is now taking concrete form as we bring together the Biodôme, the Botanical Garden, the Insectarium and the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium on one site. By combining art and astronomy in one signature building, Space for Life is reinventing the very concept of what a Planetarium should be. We are setting the tone for all our future projects, in fact, as we strive to create bold sensory experiences as a way of encouraging closer bonds between humankind and nature," said Charles-Mathieu Brunelle, Executive Director of Space for Life.
The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium, the result of an international architecture competition won by the Montréal firm of Cardin Ramirez Julien, already has a strong identity all its own. It is in perfect harmony with its surroundings and was built to meet LEED environmental certification standards. It is aiming for LEED Platinum certification, in fact. Bathed in natural light, with clean lines and a welcoming atmosphere, it is designed to enhance visitors' experience as they discover the Universe in a totally new way.
The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium is positioning itself as a leader on the international scene, by giving creativity a permanent role in a scientific institution. It combines cutting-edge technology, scientific know-how and creativity in two complementary immersive theatres. This creative approach is evident in the Multimedia Theatre, where the first original production by the internationally renowned Montréal duo of Victor Pilon and Michel Lemieux will be presented right from the start. The technical wizardry employed in the Astronomical Theatre, for its part, will make it possible to present the clearest starry sky in Montréal and carry visitors off on a thrilling virtual journey taking them light years from Earth.
The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium was made possible with the collaboration of the Olympic Park and the financial support of the Ville de Montréal, the provincial government, the federal government and Rio Tinto Alcan.
