Montréal will be host to an unprecedented Assembly of Social Movements from Quebec, Canada and the First Nations to fight climate changes

MONTRÉAL, June 6, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - As Montreal readies itself to host the traditional Formula 1 Grand Prix, the solidarity organisation Alternatives and the Council of Canadians, along with esteemed environmentalists and allies from social justice movements, will launch an Assembly of Social Movements on Climate Change which, for the first time ever, will include movements and groups from Quebec, Canada and First Nations, and aims to work together in implementing common strategies in the fight against climate change.

The first meeting for the Assembly on Climate Change will take place in Montreal on Friday, June 6^th 2014, and will continue in Ottawa on August 23^rd during the Peoples' Social Forum. The Assembly will address the main culprit of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada: the extraction of oil from tar sands. The participants will discuss how to implement common strategies in order to affect policies that allow for oil extraction and distribution in Canada, as well as the impacts that this extraction will have on Indigenous communities and the environment in Canada.

The Peoples' Social Forum will welcome over 10 000 people in Ottawa from August 21^st to 24^th, 2014. It will be a historic event as activists and progressives from Quebec, Canada and First Nations populations will meet up and work together.

The Assembly of Social Movements on Climate Change will take place at the Centre St-Pierre, Room Fernand-Daoust, 1212 Panet Street, 9AM to 4PM.
