MONTRÉAL, March 3, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mayor of Montréal, Denis Coderre, and Montréal Executive Committee member responsible for procurement, sports and recreation, and communities of diverse origins, Dimitrios Jim Beis, today announced that Montréal will host Athletics Canada Indoor Open Championships at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard March 14-16, 2014. The announcement was made in the presence of Mathieu Gentes, from Athletics Canada, Jessica Zélinka and Karine Belleau-Béliveau along with elite and up-and-coming athletes.
"Montréal is a city that is increasingly defining itself as a sports city. A proof of this is the return of the Canadian Indoor Open Championships, to Montréal, after a 20 year break. The City is investing in sports facilities to benefit the community which will also serve to host future major sports events. These commitments will have multiple spinoffs on the local and international scene," said the mayor of Montréal.
Investment at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard
Investments of $28 million over the past ten years have helped maintain the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard's high standards.
The $1.2-million invested to refurbish the athletic track helped Montréal host the 2014 athletics championships and will for the next four years.
The Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard will also host the Jeux du Québec in 2016 and the World Police and Fire Games in 2017. It is also worth highlighting that the women's World Cup of Tennis tournament (Fed Cup) was recently held at the facility.
Canadian Indoor Championships
The Canadian Indoor Championships is organized by the Club d'athlétisme Les Vainqueurs, in association with the Fédération québécoise d'athlétisme.
The three-day competition will feature running, jumping and weight throwing events which will determine the best Canadian athletes in the youth and junior divisions. It will also bring together many Olympic athletes and members of the world championship team in a special by invite competition.
