More places for the public to drop off their old electronics

MONTREAL, March 1, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Québec Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA-Québec) is pleased to announce that, starting today, retailers Best Buy and Future Shop have joined Quebec's program for the responsible recovery and reclamation of electronic products. With the addition of these 38 in-store drop-off points, ARPE-Québec has taken a considerable step in the deployment of its program on a much greater scale, with the total number of drop-off points open to the public now reaching nearly 350.

In addition to ecocentres and second-hand outlets in many municipalities, the public now has even more places to dispose of their unwanted electronics such as desktops, laptops, monitors and TVs of all sizes. "Since the regulation came into force in July 2012, we have made every effort to expand our network to cover all of Quebec and to provide citizens, regardless of where they live, with even greater access to our program," said Dominique Levesque, Executive Director of EPRA-Québec. "We would like to thank these retailers who, in their own way, contribute to protecting the environment, and we encourage others to do the same," added Ms. Levesque.

The Quebec program for the responsible recovery and reclamation of electronic products was introduced on July 14, 2012, under the Regulation respecting the recovery and reclamation of products by enterprises. The application of an environmental handling fee, or EHF, on the cost of new regulated electronic products sold in Quebec, supports the financing of additional drop-off points throughout Quebec as well as covers the costs of collecting, transporting and responsible recycling of electronics. These products will be sent for reuse, refurbishment and/or recycling to enterprises verified by EPRA's Recycler Qualification Office (www.rqp.ca).

As a recognized industry-led not-for-profit organization, EPRA-Québec is comprised of manufacturers, distributors and retailers of electronics sold in Quebec. It is responsible for implementing and operating, on behalf of its stewards, a program for the recycling of electronic products in accordance with standards established by EPRA and the requirements of the Quebec Product Stewardship Program for End-of-Life Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
