More than 600 Teacher Delegates to Meet in Windsor
OECTA Annual General Meeting 2012
TORONTO, March 6, 2012 /CNW/ - From March 10 to 12, 2012 more than 600 teachers will meet in Windsor for the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association's (OECTA) 2012 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
This diverse group of delegates is comprised of elementary, secondary and occasional teachers from across the province who represent OECTA's general membership. The assembly will debate and deliberate on issues that impact OECTA members both in their capacity as teachers and as citizens of Ontario. Decisions made by this AGM will include voting on annual fees, anti-bullying initiatives, and the election of officers who will serve the Association as the 2012-2013 Provincial Executive.
"The AGM democratically represents the 45,000 teachers in the publicly funded Catholic schools in this province," says Kevin O'Dwyer, OECTA President. "Delegates are charged with the responsibility of making decisions that can and will guide this Association through the coming year. The AGM is also a time of celebration of the great works by teachers in our schools and an opportunity to witness our faith in action. The lively debate at the AGM captures our democratic process and ensures we are meeting the needs of classroom teachers."
Through its AGM, OECTA raises awareness of socio-economic justice issues in Canada and internationally. Building on its ongoing commitment to the common good, this year the Association hosts a presentation on the issues of human trafficking and welcomes keynote speaker Linda McQuaig, noted journalist and best-selling author of several books on politics and economics.
"It is exciting to hold the AGM in Windsor, a long-standing and proud labour-town that exemplifies community involvement and support even in recent difficult economic times," said O'Dwyer. "This is the basis of a great community, which I'm sure the delegates will recognize."
