Morneau Shepell releases the results of its Performance Universe of Pension Managers' Pooled Funds Français
Good pension fund returns in second quarter of 2016
TORONTO, July 20, 2016 /CNW/ - Morneau Shepell (TSX: MSI) has released the results of its Performance Universe of Pension Managers' Pooled Funds for the second quarter of 2016.
According to the report, in the second quarter of this year, diversified pooled fund managers posted a median return of 2.5 per cent before management fees. The median year-to-date return was 2.5 per cent.
"Pension funds had a very good quarter despite market uncertainty and volatility stemming from the United Kingdom referendum on leaving the European Union," said Jean Bergeron, Partner responsible for Morneau Shepell's Asset and Risk Management Consulting team. "Canadian equities had high returns again, with the S&P TSX Index posting 5.1 per cent for the quarter and 9.84 per cent since the beginning of the year. For the most part, however, managers of Canadian equity portfolios were not able to match that performance."
Bergeron added, "The decline in interest rates helped bond managers to obtain a median yield of 2.84 per cent. Global and emerging markets equities also posted positive returns in the second quarter. On a solvency basis, despite good market advances, pension fund financial positions declined slightly. Since the start of the year, the solvency ratio of the average pension plan has fallen by 1.1 per cent. "
On average, during the second quarter of 2016, diversified pooled fund managers underperformed the benchmark. In fact, the median return (2.5 per cent) for these managers was 1.0 per cent lower than the benchmark portfolio (with an allocation of 55 per cent in equity and 45 per cent in fixed income) and a return of (3.5 per cent) used by many pension funds.
Canadian bonds
In the second quarter of 2016, managers obtained a median return of 2.7 per cent on bonds (Universe mandate) which was 0.1 per cent above the benchmark.
During the same period, long-term bonds posted a return of 5.5 per cent, while the return for medium-term bonds was 2.4 per cent and for short-term bonds 0.7 per cent. High-yield bonds posted 5.7 per cent, while real return bonds provided a 3.7 per cent return.
Canadian equities
During the first quarter of 2016, the median return for Canadian equity managers was 3.3 per cent, which is 1.8 per cent lower than the 5.1 per cent achieved by the S&P/TSX Index.
During the first quarter of 2016 the S&P/TSX Small Cap Index increased by 17.9 per cent, whereas the S&P/TSX Completion Index representing mid-cap stocks rose 7.7 per cent, and the large-cap S&P/TSX 60 Index posted gains of 4.2 per cent.
Foreign equities
Foreign equity managers' median returns and appropriate benchmark indices for the second quarter of 2016 are as follows:
- 2.3 per cent for U.S. equities versus 1.9 per cent for the S&P 500 Index (C$);
- negative 1.4 per cent for international equities versus negative 1.1 per cent for the MSCI EAFE Index (C$);
- 1.8 per cent for global equities versus 1.4 per cent for the MSCI World Index (C$);
- 2.8 per cent for emerging markets equities versus 1.2 per cent for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index (C$).
Alternative investments
The Dow Jones Credit Suisse Hedge Fund Index (previously CSFB/Tremont Hedge Fund Index) posted a return of negative 0.1 per cent (C$) for the second quarter of 2016.
The Performance Universe covers about 341 pooled funds managed by nearly 50 investment management firms. The pooled funds included in the Universe have a market value of more than $278 billion.
