Seventy per cent report pain interferes with activities that involve standing or kneeling
TORONTO, Dec. 8, 2014 /CNW/ - Whether you watch them on TV, follow them through social media, or share over-the-fence war stories with your neighbours, do-it-yourself (DIY) activities for your home are becoming increasingly popular. Creating something with your own two hands can be both satisfying and cost-effective. But rolling up your sleeves can come with its own set of drawbacks, with pain leading the way. A recent survey commissioned by Innocor Comfort, the maker of the Stanley® Utility Mat, suggests that the majority of Canadians (70 per cent) suffer from pain as a result of DIY activities with 39 per cent of those sufferers admitting that the pain makes it difficult for them to complete the project.
"Experiencing some sort of pain or general discomfort is pretty common with many DIY or household activities because it can be so labour intensive," said Colin Hunter, General Contractor and Cottage TV Host. "The stress on your body from either kneeling or standing at an awkward angle can take its toll, but you can alleviate it with a back support strap and an anti-fatigue mat."
Fortunately, there is a solution for Canadian DIYers or those looking for pain relief while on the job. The Stanley® Utility Mat recently debuted in Canada and is available in Walmart stores across the country. Made with tear-resistant 100 per cent polyurethane, the mats feature a textured surface and anti-skid bottom meeting all NFSI industry slip-resistance standards for safety. Proven to relieve pressure on users' feet, knees and backs, consumer trials have shown that users experience a 100 per cent increase in comfort, as well as less pain and fatigue, when standing on a Stanley Utility Mat while working. Resistant to common lubricants and solvents, the mats also come with a 20-year guarantee and can be purchased for $29.98.
"As a company, we are proud to launch the Stanley® Utility Mats to Canadian DIYers as an easy, cost-effective, solution to help with everyday aches and pains," said Mike Loomis, Executive Vice President of Business and Product Development, Innocor Comfort. "Regardless of your age, or gender, it's important to take proactive steps to protect your body, whether you're at home or in the workplace."
The survey also revealed that back pain was the most common type of pain experienced by Canadians while doing standing or kneeling-related activities around the house (51 per cent). This was followed by knee pain at 34 per cent, foot/heel pain at 22 per cent, hip pain at 17 per cent and ankle pain at 12 per cent. The survey also reported that intense pain caused 16 per cent of DIYers to stop the work altogether further demonstrating the importance of preventative measures to reduce aches and pains.
*Survey of 1501 Canadians was conducted by Leger online panel, LegerWeb from September 8-11th, 2014.
