MONTREAL, March 9, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - Mothers and grandmothers across Canada are uniting to demand that concrete measures be taken to protect children from the impacts of climate change. Calling themselves Mothers Step In (Mères au front, in French), they want emergency action on the part of the federal government to ensure the health, safety and well-being of their kids.
A landmark UN Report in The Lancet recently warned that children are "under immediate threat" from climate change and environmental degradation. The members of Mothers Step In deem the risks too high, and refuse to stand by and watch as the world warms to a point that is dangerous for their children.
On Mother's Day, May 10th, they will march on Parliament in Ottawa, as well as in other communities in Canada, to ensure that their voices are heard. They will wear black, with green hearts pinned to their chests, and rise up as a unified force fueled by the love they have for their kids, and their duty to protect them.
Mothers Step In is putting out a national call to all mothers and grandmothers, and to all those who think children must be protected against climate change, from all backgrounds and communities, to walk with them in Ottawa on May 10th. They are joined in this call to action by other grassroots organizations like For Our Kids (Pour nos enfants) and Parents pour le climat (Parents for Climate).
The organizations involved will also initiate smaller Mother's Day marches and activities in communities nationwide.
"The government has had years to address this. We all know we're running out of time, and yet nothing has been done. It's unacceptable. Why is the future of our children not a top priority in this country?" says Alexandra Haedrich, a mother in Montreal.
"We know that we must act – and act now – to avoid the worst impacts of climate change," says Laure Waridel, mother and author of a book on how to address the climate crisis. "The solutions exist. They are within our reach and will benefit everyone's health and well-being. Nothing should be more important than the safety of our children."
"We've reached out to hundreds of mothers, who are all just as ready as we are to fight for their kids' futures. So forget flowers and brunch for Mother's Day, because all we want this year are real measures to protect our kids," says filmmaker and mother Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette.
"Climate change is already hurting our children. In the North, the permafrost is melting, the caribou are dying. It's hurting all our communities. It has gone too far," says Melissa Mollen Dupuis, mother from the community of Ekuanitshit.
