New Spin on Annual Take Back the Night March & Rally
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 18, 2012 /CNW/ - The Sexual Assault/ Rape Crisis Centre of Peel is excited to announce a fresh twist on an annual tradition. For its 18th year, arts & cultural performances showcasing local performers has been added to the annual community rally and march to raise awareness about sexual violence and violence against women, children and trans folk. This year's Take Back the Night Peel will be held between 3p.m. and 9:30p.m. outside of Lincoln M. Alexander School in Malton, Mississauga.
This year's Take Back the Night Peel promises to be bigger and better than ever as it will see the addition of free art creation stations as well as arts and cultural performances, including an open mic showcasing local performers, all around the theme of sexual violence prevention. The expression of ideas, emotions, and sometimes difficult issues through any artistic discipline has been a key way of impacting change over the years. This is especially important because sexual violence is a huge issue in Peel. The 24 hour crisis line that the Sexual Assault Centre operates to support survivors of sexual violence has seen a dramatic 40% increase in new callers from 2010-2011 and based on how things have been going thus far in 2012 it is easy to predict an increase by the end of 2012.
Take Back the Night began as a rally in Philadelphia in 1975 in response to a woman who was murdered while walking home from work and now has expanded to communities all around the world as a means to raise awareness about violence in all forms and to provide an opportunity for women to reclaim the night so that they can feel safe walking on the streets at night.
Community members are invited to show their support for ending violence by registering individually or in teams for the march at www.takebackthenightpeel.com.
