TORONTO, Dec. 8, 2015 /CNW/ - Employers across the Greater Toronto Area in virtually every industry are improving their workplaces and stepping up their human resources initiatives to attract talented employees. The 10th annual list of Greater Toronto's Top Employers was announced this morning by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project, highlighting the rivalry among employers to attract the best and brightest in the nation's most competitive labour market.
"It's wonderful to see the range of industries represented in this year's list of winners, says Richard Yerema, Managing Editor at Mediacorp Canada Inc., which manages the competition. "From finance to manufacturing, private and public sector, this year's list includes inspirational examples from virtually every industry in the GTA. Whatever your organization does, these employers show that you really can create a better workplace – and it's happening here in the GTA."
This year saw a record number of employers applying for the competition. Nationally, Mediacorp editors started by examining the recruitment histories of over 85,000 employers that it tracks for its popular job-search engine, Eluta.ca. From this pool of growing organizations, Mediacorp invited approximately 8,000 employers to submit detailed applications, including a detailed review of their operations and HR practices that compares them to others in their industry and region.
"The strength of the employers on this year's GTA list reflects the strength of the region itself," says Tony Meehan, Publisher at Mediacorp. "Each year, it gets more difficult to choose the winners and, after 10 years, the level of competition is now exceptional. These organizations are raising the bar for all employers across the GTA."
Employers across the GTA were evaluated by the editors at Canada's Top 100 Employers using the same criteria as the national competition: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The annual competition is open to any employer with its head office in the GTA; employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector.
Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the nation's largest publisher of employment periodicals and guides. Since 2007, the Toronto-based publisher has managed the Greater Toronto's Top Employers competition as part of its annual Canada's Top 100 Employers project. The publishing firm also operates the largest Canadian job search engine, Eluta.ca, which features editorial reviews from the project and now reaches over seven million Canadians annually. Mediacorp also manages Canada's largest annual event for senior-level HR professionals, the Top Employer Summit, which last month featured former US President Bill Clinton as keynote speaker.
