WINNIPEG, June 7, 2013 /CNW/ - MTS, Manitoba's leading full-service communications provider, is proud to honour the 75th anniversary of the MTS Volunteers, a group of current and former MTS employees and their families that donates more than 50,000 hours annually to support non-profit and charitable organizations across Manitoba.
"On behalf of all of us at MTS, I would like to congratulate the MTS Volunteers on their diamond anniversary and extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for the tremendous contribution they make to our community," said Kelvin Shepherd, President, MTS. "More than 200 organizations across our province benefit from their support annually and I am so pleased to see the legacy continue year-after-year."
Last night, at the Qualico Family Centre in Assiniboine Park, MTS held a celebratory event. City of Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, Minister of Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs, Jim Rondeau and MTS President Kelvin Shepherd expressed their congratulations, which was followed by a special dedication in honour of past, present and future MTS Volunteers.
The MTS Volunteers have contributed more than one million hours of community service in Manitoba over the last 75 years. The group has raised and donated tens of thousands of dollars to non-profit and charitable organizations throughout Manitoba including, among others, Ronald McDonald House Manitoba, Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg, Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, and Variety, the Children's Charity of Manitoba.
"The MTS Volunteers organization gave me an opportunity to develop leadership skills and to get to know my colleagues from work, who are like family," said MTS Volunteer Liaison Barb Culbertson, who has been volunteering with MTS since 1994. "Volunteering is my way of giving back to the community and MTS."
As part of MTS's corporate giving program, MTS supports the work of the MTS Volunteers through financial and in-kind support, including the provision of a special work facility for the MTS Volunteers, as well as access to the MTS fleet of vehicles.
Over the course of their history, the MTS Volunteers have been recognized individually and as a group, with numerous awards and accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, Premier's Volunteer Service Award, Mayor's Volunteer Service Award and the Gold Medal Award for Innovation by Industry Canada.
"Volunteer Manitoba applauds the MTS Volunteers for their unwavering dedication and truly unique commitment as a long standing volunteer organization in our Province. Their loyalty to our community and MTS is very special," said Noreen Nian, incoming Executive Director for Volunteer Manitoba. "This group exemplifies the true spirit and generosity of Manitobans."
