CORNWALL, ON, July 30, 2018 /CNW/ - On July 18th 2018, members of the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) in collaboration with Québec law enforcement groups conducted operations in the area of Pointe-Trépanier area in St-Anicet, QC. After observing a transaction between an individual in a vessel and onshore, the CRTF seized 634 Kilograms of contraband tobacco, one vessel, and one vehicle. A second vehicle was later located in the Châteauguay area by Châteauguay Police. The matter is still under investigation. One 27 year old male from Beloeil Québec was arrested and will be facing charges under the Excise Act for tobacco smuggling.
In the evening of July 18th, 2018, members of the CRTF observed an exchange between an individual in a commercial vehicle and a boat on private waterfront property in the Bainsville area. Further investigation revealed the movement of contraband tobacco onto shore and into a vehicle. CRTF successfully arrested two males involved, and seized a total of 1,384Kg of unstamped fine cut tobacco along with the vehicle destined to carry the contraband. Jean-Francois Veilleux from Terrebonne Québec and Antoine Jean from Valleyfield Québec are facing charges under the Excise Act 2001. They were released from custody and will appear in Court on September 4th 2018 to answer to their charge.
