Founder and Chairman of Canadian Natural Resources Limited to be honoured in Washington, D.C. ceremony
MONTREAL, Nov. 18, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Murray Edwards, one of Canada's leading business figures, has been selected to receive the International Horatio Alger Award in 2014, the Horatio Alger Association of Canada announced today.
The International Horatio Alger Award is presented to an individual from Canada each year who has persevered through adversity to become a successful entrepreneur or community leader by the Washington, D.C.-based Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc. Recipients of the Award become lifelong members of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada and serve as role models for its young scholarship recipients. Mr. Edwards will be honoured in Washington, D.C. during the 67th Annual Horatio Alger Awards Induction Ceremonies in April 2014.
"There isn't a Canadian more deserving of this award than Murray Edwards - a man of extraordinary business achievement and a dedicated philanthropist," said Dominic D'Alessandro, President of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada. "Murray's story showcases that hard work pays off."
Murray Edwards has a wide range of business interests including oil and natural gas, energy services, mining, aerospace and ski resorts. He is Chairman of Canadian Natural Resources Limited and Chairman and co-owner of the Calgary Flames hockey team.
Mr. Edwards was raised in a modest home in Regina. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a commerce degree and obtained his law degree from the University of Toronto. Mr. Edwards then moved to Calgary and after practicing law, recapitalized Canadian Natural Resources in 1989 at the age of 30. Over the next two decades, Mr. Edwards helped transform Canadian Natural Resources into one of the world's largest energy companies, employing close to 5,000 workers with operations in the North Sea and West Africa.
"I am exceptionally fortunate to receive this award and I look forward to contributing actively to the Association and to promoting its mission," said Mr. Edwards.
