Nathan Cumberland wins the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS 2018 Canadian Championship and Stirling Hart wins the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Canadian Trophy in Wasaga Beach, ON
WASAGA BEACH, ON, July 23, 2018 /CNW/ - The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Canadian Championship was held July 19-21, 2018 with 19 of Canada's top professional STIHL TIMBERSPORTS athletes competing for the Canadian Champion title with the most coveted title awarded to Nathan Cumberland. The Championship took place in the sun and sand in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, while the Wasaga Beach Motorcycle Rally was happening as well. The first round of Pro Men's Qualifiers began on Thursday and continued with the Rookie's Division Championship and another round of Men's Pro Qualifiers on Friday. Saturday finished off with exciting battles for both the title of the Rookie Division Champion and the 2018 Canadian Champion.
Using sharp axes and powerful chainsaws, athletes competed in six different disciplines, that involved cutting wood both quickly and meticulously in timed trials.
The overall victor, Nathan Cumberland from Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick chopped and sawed his way to the 2018 Canadian Championship title, dominating the other eighteen fierce competitors.
Anita Jezowski from Nanaimo, British Columbia was crowned the 2018 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Canadian Women's Champion after she demonstrated great agility and precision, while competing against seven other highly skilled athletes.
Up-and-comer, Connor Morse from Kingston, Nova Scotia, is starting to make a name for himself by beating out five other solid competitors for the 2018 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Rookie Canadian Championship title.
Team Canada was also announced this weekend that will represent Canada at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS World Championship in Liverpool, England in October. The team will consist of Stirling Hart, Mitch Hewitt, Marcel Dupuis, George Williams and Ben Cumberland.
The Canadian Championship competition also determines the athletes who will make up Team Canada at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS World Championship, which in 2018 will happen in Liverpool, England in October. Rookie Champion, Connor Morse, will also join the team in Liverpool.
The weekend finished off on Sunday July 22, 2018 with the relay-formatted Canadian Trophy. Fifteen athletes competed in a race to compete the stock saw, underhand chop, single buck and standing block chop in the fastest time. In the final heat, Stirling Hart from Vancouver, BC won the race against Mitch Hewitt from Scotch Creek, BC. Stirling Hart, who just won the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS World Champions Trophy back in May, will once again represent Canada at the World Champions Trophy to defend his title.
