National class action launched regarding Ford 15-passenger Vans
WINNIPEG, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - "In the case of our representative plaintiff, Stella Gurr, her son Michael was traveling as a passenger in a Ford 15 passenger van and killed in an accident which took place on September 25, 2008", said Tony Merchant, Q.C.
"Our Statement of Claim asserts that these vehicles should never have been used as 15 passenger vans. The resulting accidents and deaths in Canada were tragic and avoidable", said Tony Merchant. Merchant Law Group, a law firm with 12 offices across Canada, launched this first national class action with the Courts in Winnipeg last week, and plans to launch similar class action lawsuits in the next few weeks.
Ms. Gurr along with other families from New Brunswick were in Halifax today, following a meeting with federal and provincial transportation ministers.
"The tragic death of Ms. Gurr's son could have been avoided if these vehicles had been recalled or banned from being used as passenger vans by the federal government. The dangers associated with Ford 15 passenger vans were clear long before 2008." According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, 1,100 people were killed in the United States in single-vehicle rollovers involving these vans between 1992 and 2002 alone.
Our firm's national class action litigation seeks compensation for the families of victims who have died in these vehicles, and also seeks compensation for schools, community associations, and people who own Ford 15 passenger vans that are unsafe for use.
