MONTREAL, March 7, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Due to the events in the last few months, this year's National Engineering Month is of particular importance for the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. Just like every year, the OIQ is launching various initiatives in March to promote the profession. However, given the current context, the OIQ will take the opportunity this year to remind the public of its commitment to get to the heart of things in order to restore trust in the profession, which has 63,000 members who work in a wide range of different fields.
The OIQ conveys its commitment in a message that will be broadcast starting today on television and on the Web. The commercial was created by Bleublancrouge agency and emphasizes the values that the OIQ is committed to defend: competence, rigour, transparency and accountability.
"From the disciplinary process and our professional conduct action plan to our active contribution to the work of the Charbonneau Commission, all of our activities in recent months show just how seriously we take our commitment to the public," said OIQ President Daniel Lebel, Eng.
Engineering promotion and recognition
National Engineering Month is a nation-wide event specifically designed to introduce the engineering profession to young people and celebrate excellence in it.
"Raising awareness in young people - girls and boys - and the general public about the multiple facets of the engineering profession is still an important factor in developing the next generation of engineers. In doing so, we want to show that engineers contribute to Québec's socioeconomic development and ignite desire in young people who are motivated by innovation and technology," explained Lebel.
The OIQ has planned three initiatives for the 2013 National Engineering Month: a quiz contest for young people, the Soirées signature ingénieur(e) events and the fiftieth anniversary of the OIQ's magazine.
"Tricks and Genius" - To pique the curiosity of young people, the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec is offering a brand new entertaining and educational quiz contest that they can enter on the Web site www.placepourtoi.ca. The "Tricks and Genius" contest, which offers $3,000 in prizes, is a game with a comic strip format in which site visitors must find the science trick that will help the main character, Doctor Bolt, retrieve an object. The Web site www.placepourtoi.ca will be promoted in a commercial broadcast during Génial!, a science show on Télé-Québec whose official partner is the OIQ.
Soirées signature ingénieur(e) - National Engineering Month is also the perfect moment to welcome the more than 2,000 new engineers who have earned their engineer's permit in the last 12 months. The two Soirées signature events will take place on March 12, 2013 at Espace 400e Bell in Quebec City and on March 20, 2013 at the Montreal Science Centre. As in past years, the OIQ will highlight this important step in the careers of its members by publishing the names of all the new engineers in Les Affaires and several daily newspapers.
PLAN magazine celebrates 50 years! - This year's National Engineering Month coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of PLAN, the OIQ's magazine. To highlight this event, the publication's graphic design has been given a makeover and now features a cleaner look. PLAN has had a front row seat to the developments in Québec engineering over the last 50 years and the March issue takes a look back at them.
