National Magazine Awards Foundation announces the Winners of the 37th National Magazine Awards Français
TORONTO, June 6, 2014 /CNW/ - The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) presented the winners of the 37th annual National Magazine Awards at a gala this evening in Toronto at The Carlu, presented by CDS Global, and hosted by Canadian author and humourist Scott Feschuk. MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR
The coveted title of Magazine of the Year was awarded to Cottage Life. Cottage Life also won the Gold Medal in the categories How-To and Service: Personal Finance & Business and Silver in the Homes and Gardens category. Cottage Life previously won this award in 1992. Honourable Mention for Magazine of the Year was awarded to Azure and Nouveau Projet. [Read more about this award.]
The award for Tablet Magazine of the Year went to Sportsnet. Honourable Mention went to Canadian Business and The Hockey News. [Read more about this award.]
The award for Magazine Website of the Year went to macleans.ca, the online portal of Maclean's magazine. Honourable Mention went to the websites of Hazlitt and Torontoist. [Read more about this award.]
The winner of the award for Best New Magazine Writer was Catherine McIntyre, for her story "Clusterf*ck" published in THIS Magazine. [Read more about this award.]
Longtime editor of The New Quarterly Kim Jernigan was presented with the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. [Read more about this award.]

Also winning a Silver Award were Brick, Canadian Business, Chatelaine, Dress to Kill Magazine, FASHION Magazine, Financial Post Magazine, NOW Magazine, Prism International, Profit, Rotman Management, Vallum and Zoomer.
Three magazines won a National Magazine Award for the first time:
- Legion Magazine: Gold Medals in Investigative Reporting and in Service: Health & Family
- Little Brother Magazine: Gold medal in Fiction
- Fshnunlimited (f.u.): Gold medal in Art Direction of an Entire Issue
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 37th NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS
The "Tenth Anniversary Issue" of The Walrus, with cover art by photographer Edward Burtynsky, won Gold in Best Single Issue, while Burtynsky's collection of images won Gold in Words & Pictures. The issue also won Honourable Mention for Art Direction of an Entire Issue.
Report on Business magazine won the Gold medal in Magazine Covers for "Larry Fink." For ROB art director Domenic Macri this is his third Gold for covers, the most in National Magazine Awards history. The cover photography by Anya Chibis also won Gold in Portrait Photography.
The newest award, for best Infographic, was won by The Grid, for "How Much Does a Street Cost?"
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WRITING AWARDS
Writer Curtis Gillespie won a record-tying 4 National Magazine Awards (2 Gold, 2 Silver) from 5 nominations, including a sweep of Gold and Silver in the Essays category.
- Gold: Essays, "In the Chair" (Eighteen Bridges)
- Gold: Arts & Entertainment, "Rebel Without Applause" (Eighteen Bridges)
- Silver: Essays, "Rebel Without Applause" (Eighteen Bridges)
- Silver: Travel, "Crash Course" (Western Living)
Gala Master of Ceremonies Scott Feschuk won Gold for Humour ("Assemble ingredients. Pause dramatically"; Maclean's), his third win in this category.
In Poetry, Karen Solie won Gold for "Conversion" (Hazlitt), her first NMA following three previous nominations. Patrick Lane won the Silver Medal in Poetry for a suite of poems in Vallum. It is his third NMA for poetry and first since he won Gold in 1988.
In Fiction, the Gold award went to Jess Taylor for "Paul" in Little Brother Magazine. The Silver went to Pasha Malla, previously a NMA winner in Humour, for "The Actual" in Prism International.
Katrina Onstad won two National Magazine Awards: a Silver medal in Society ("Portrait of a Ten-Year-Old Girl"; The Walrus) and a Silver medal in Profiles ("The Dark Knight"; Toronto Life).
Valérie Borde won Gold in Service: Lifestyle for "Vive le poisson éco!" (L'actualité). This is her fifth NMA.
The Gold medal in Sports & Recreation went to Jonathan Trudel for "La machine à broyer les rêves" (L'actualité). This is the seventh NMA for the former winner of the Best New Magazine Writer award (2001).
Charles Wilkins won Gold in Business for "This Little Piggy…" (Report on Business), his fourth National Magazine Award.
The Gold medal in Personal Journalism went to Liz Windhorst Harmer for "Blip" (Malahat Review); she also won Honourable Mention in Best New Magazine Writer for "Pain: A Brief History of My Intensity" (The New Quarterly).
Winning a Silver medal in Investigative Reporting for "Les dessous de l'affaire Turcotte'' (L'actualité), Catherine Dubé now has nine National Magazine Awards to her credit.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE VISUAL AWARDS
The inaugural issue of fshnunlimited (f.u.) and its creative director Paul Sych won the Gold medal for Art Direction of an Entire Issue.
The creative team at Underline Studio won Gold for Art Direction for a Single Magazine Article, for their work "Not in the Age of the Pharaohs" in Prefix Photo. This is the tenth NMA for Underline Studio.
In Illustration, Selena Wong won her second NMA Gold in this category, for "Old Wounds" (Maisonneuve). The Silver winner was Jillian Tamaki ("Hot Wired"; The Walrus), her fourth NMA.
Gracia Lam won both the Gold and Silver medals for Spot Illustration for her artwork in Maisonneuve.
Flare won the Gold award in Fashion for the fourth time in five years, for "Pastels Take Shape."

ACHIEVEMENTS IN DIGITAL PUBLISHING
The website of The Walrus (thewalrus.ca) won Gold for best Magazine Website Design for the third time in four years.
The feature "Canada's Best New Restaurants 2013" in enRoute magazine won Gold in Editorial Package: Web and also Silver in Service: Lifestyle.
The multimedia story "Boy Genius" in Maclean's won Gold in Online Video and in Best Short Feature.
Torontoist won Gold and Silver in Blogs, for "Historicist" (Gold) and "Council Watch" (Silver). Zoomer ("This Is What 70 Looks Like: Myths and Realities") also shared the Silver in Blogs.

More than 500 members of the Canadian magazine industry—publishers, editors, art directors, writers, photographers, illustrators, circulators and more—joined esteemed sponsors and other guests at the 37th annual National Magazine Awards gala, at The Carlu in Toronto, presented by CDS Global.
