How Best to Protect Canadian Breasts?
TORONTO, Oct 5 /CNW/ - October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Canadians will take part in various fundraising events to raise money and help fight this cancer that will affect an estimated 23,200 Canadian women in 2010.
How should Canadians determine which foundations to support? In the last few years, the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness month has been overshadowed by a flood of "pinkwashing" by marketing campaigns. As a result, potential donors have begun to question whether or not fundraising efforts really have a demonstrable affect on diagnosing, treating, and ultimately eradicating the disease.
The Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC) ensures that 92 cents out of every dollar raised goes directly towards breast cancer research initiatives across Canada. The BCSC makes significant contributions to innovative research projects by way of two important grants:
- Seed funding: provides the upfront capital necessary to gather preliminary findings which are used to apply for further research grants.
- Translational research: focuses on the application of medical research and seeks to quickly turn discoveries into actual patient care practices.
Marsha Davidson, Executive Director, Breast Cancer Society of Canada is available for interviews to discuss:
- The prevalence of breast cancer in Canada
- What to consider when selecting a charity/foundation
- Why translational research and seed funding can help expedite breakthroughs in breast cancer patient care.
