Neighbourhood Pharmacies Supports Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Announcement
TORONTO, Dec. 1, 2016 /CNW/ - The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Dr. Eric Hoskins announced today that more vaccines will be available at pharmacies across Ontario making it easier and more convenient for Ontarians to stay healthy.
On behalf of the Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada (Neighbourhood Pharmacies), Justin J. Bates, CEO, "commends the Ontario government on today's announcement, which recognizes the vital role that our member pharmacists and pharmacies can play to ensure that when Ontarians travel away from home, they can do so protected by medically essential vaccines, provided at their neighbourhood pharmacy."
Over the past four years, the increased use of pharmacies as the location of choice for seasonal influenza vaccinations has demonstrated to governments and the public that pharmacies play an important and growing role in providing vaccinations. Pharmacists are accessible and cost-effective members of the public health system, and Neighbourhood Pharmacies members stand even more ready and able to meet Ontarian's demand for vaccinations, with thousands of pharmacies across Ontario.
As of December 15, 2016, Ontario Pharmacists will be able to administer vaccines to protect against 13 additional preventable diseases including Hepatitis A and B, Shingles and HPV to anyone five years of age and older.
"Governments, public health agencies, and ultimately patients will benefit from further integrating pharmacists and pharmacies in the delivery of Ontario's healthcare services" add Bates.
Patients are encouraged to speak to their pharmacist to find out which vaccines they can receive directly at the pharmacy.
