Nellie Mayshak of Canaf Consulting Emphasizes Innovation in Public Sector Reform
TORONTO, Dec. 7, 2017 /CNW/ - Public sector reform is a critical imperative, especially among the developing countries of the world that intend to take their place alongside leaders in creating healthy societies.
But, Nellie Mayshak says that the same enthusiasm for innovation that drives the private sector must be brought to the public sector to ensure positive change.
Nellie Mayshak is well-known for the high profile government reform projects she and her firm, Canaf Consulting Associates, have undertaken. Since 2004, she has spearheaded programs to rebuild and reform governments and their governance, policies and services.
Mayshak says her work is inspired by public service innovators. "We all can learn and grow and do better with such examples," she says. She points to the Republic of Estonia, which has pioneered digital public services for its residents. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, a collaborative "social lab" in Amsteldorp joins "the system" with residents, knowledge and methodologies to create more effectively organized eldercare. In the United Kingdom, the move to intelligent street lighting has not only saved money, but reduced carbon emissions and increased safety.
"The goal of public sector reform is to see countries evolve public administrations that are efficient, responsive, transparent and accountable," Mayshak adds. "The more we innovate on this front and share practical advice on what works, the better off our world will be."
Nellie Mayshak has been involved in assignments that have taken her from Africa to Eastern Europe to China. She also has worked closely with such well-regarded leaders as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia since 2006 and the first elected female head of state in Africa.
Recently, Nellie Mayshak led various initiatives in Nigeria, including the planning, delivery and outcome evaluations of a UKAid's £30 million public service reform program to strengthen core government systems and processes. She earlier served as lead advisor to Liberia's government in the revitalization of its civil service after nearly 20 years of conflict.
Her earlier projects involved helping the Lithuanian government create and putting in place a strategic planning and policy mode that helped the country gain admission to the European Union.
