TORONTO, Oct. 7 /CNW/ - Bill MacKinnon is the new Chair of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) and Shelley Brown assumes the position of Vice-Chair.
MacKinnon brings extensive professional experience and executive leadership to the position of Chair. He became a partner at KPMG in 1977 and retired in 2008 after serving nine years as the firm's Chief Executive Officer.
"I look forward to the new responsibilities and challenges associated with representing not only the Institute but the entire CA profession," said MacKinnon. "We operate in an ever-changing global environment and the profession must be positioned to meet new challenges. It is critical to maintain the values and principles that have long made the Canadian CA one of the most respected business designations in the world."
MacKinnon is originally from Winnipeg. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Manitoba in 1967, achieved his CA designation in 1971 and was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1994.
"I am excited about the privilege to serve as Vice-Chair," said Brown, who has both CICA Board and business experience. "The Chair and I have valuable accumulated knowledge that we can draw upon to help the profession successfully navigate through today's complex and evolving environment. The long-term demand for CAs will be strong, with all sectors including business, government and not-for-profit turning to CAs for their integrity, expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership."
Brown had previously been a CICA board member for six years and is a member of the national Board of Deloitte. She has over 30 years of experience in public practice and is a Partner in Deloitte's Saskatoon office. She also is the Office Managing Partner for the Saskatchewan practice of Deloitte which includes three offices (Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert). Brown was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta in 2009 and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan in 2002. She has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan.
MacKinnon and Brown will hold the positions of CICA Chair and Vice-Chair for two years.
Canada's CAs bring an influential voice to today's changing international professional environment. Kevin Dancey, President and CEO, CICA, chairs the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA), which represents over 775,000 professional accountants around the world. The GAA is made up of 11 of the world's leading accounting bodies, brought together to promote quality services, share information and collaborate on important international issues.
In addition, the CICA has 13 Mutual Recognition Agreements with premier accounting bodies worldwide. A prime example is the historic agreement that Canada's CAs signed with their American and Mexican counterparts. This was the first-ever mutual recognition agreement among professional designations consistent with the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The CICA's close relationships with the International Federation of Accountants and the International Accounting Standards Board provide Canada's CAs with both the influence and the flexibility needed to successfully maintain the profession's position as one of the world's best and most trusted group of accountants.
The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), together with the provincial, territorial and Bermuda Institutes/Ordre of Chartered Accountants, represents a membership of approximately 77,000 CAs and 12,000 students in Canada and Bermuda. The CICA conducts research into current business issues and supports the setting of accounting, auditing and assurance standards for business, not-for-profit organizations and government. It issues guidance on control and governance, publishes professional literature, develops continuing education programs and represents the CA profession nationally and internationally.
