NEW BOREAL PROTECTION IS ANNOUNCED IN MANITOBA
OTTAWA, Dec. 2 /CNW/ - The Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) celebrates the creation of Colvin Lake and Nueltin Lake provincial parks, which will protect a 6,100 sq km unique northern Boreal wilderness.
"We congratulate the Government of Manitoba and the Northlands Denesuline and Sayisi Dene First Nations for protecting these ecologically and culturally areas," said Larry Innes, CBI's Executive Director.
The parks together are larger than Prince Edward Island. Within the traditional territories of the two First Nations, the parks are home to many species, including the Qamanirjuaq barren ground caribou, wolverine, wolf, and lynx. A cobenefit of this conservation announcement is the estimated 126M tones of land-based carbon that will also be protected.
The Canadian Boreal Initiative brings together diverse partners to create new solutions for Boreal conservation and sustainable development. It acts as a catalyst for on-the-ground efforts across the Boreal forest region by governments, industry, First Nations, conservation groups, major retailers, financial institutions and scientists.
