New Calgary Parks Salute World War II Heroes

CALGARY, Sept. 25 /CNW/ - Two beautiful new parks dedicated to Canadians who served in World War Two were formally opened today at Currie Barracks, the new community being developed by Canada Lands Company (CLC) on the former CFB Calgary site.

"It was a real honour for me to participate in the dedication of Valour Park and Victoria Cross Park," said Grant Walsh, Chairman of CLC's board of directors. "Valour Park commemorates the sacrifices of all those Canadians who wore the uniforms of our army, navy and airforce during those critical years. And Victoria Cross Park tells the stories of the 16 Canadians who received the Victoria Cross for heroic service during the Second World War."

"The parks demonstrate our commitment to respecting the site's historic connection with Canada's armed forces," said Mark Laroche, CLC's CEO. "I am hopeful these parks will serve Calgary residents for many years to come as spaces for both recreation and reflection".

"I'm very happy to have Valour Park and Victoria Cross Park open," said Brian Pincott, Calgary's Ward 11 Alderman, who participated in the event. "Not only does it add a wonderful tribute to our veterans, but it will act as a focal point for a new and vibrant community for years to come. I think that's something that our veterans and their families will appreciate,  and I'm so happy that so many are here with us today."
