New date for inquest into the death of Toronto youth announced

TORONTO , Jan. 21 /CNW/ - Dr. James Edwards , Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that a new date has been set for the inquest into the death of a youth previously scheduled to begin on June 8, 2009 .

The 15-year-old youth died on June 20, 2006 , in Toronto's east end after being shot by the Toronto Police. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will review the events surrounding the youth's death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths in similar circumstances.

The inquest is expected to last approximately three weeks.

The inquest will now begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2010 , at the Toronto Coroners Courts, 15 Grosvenor Street. Dr. John Carlisle will preside as inquest coroner and Ms. Lorraine Cavion will be counsel to the coroner.
