New herbicide gives growers a 'Distinct' advantage in chemfallow rotations
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 16, 2012 /CNW/ - BASF Canada has received registration to bring a new chemfallow and post-harvest herbicide to Western Canada. Available now, new DISTINCT® herbicide, tank-mixed with glyphosate, offers growers exceptional weed control and resistance management in post-harvest and chemfallow applications, with total follow crop flexibility.
DISTINCT is a breakthrough in control with a new mode of action. It is made up of a premix of Group 4 and Group 19 active ingredients, giving growers superior control over perennial weeds that glyphosate alone can no longer control.
The latest example on the prairies is glyphosate-resistant Kochia. According to recent reports, it will be crucial for Western Canadian farmers to manage Kochia before it becomes widespread. Topping-up glyphosate with another effective mode of action such as in DISTINCT or HEAT®, is your best defence.
"In our trials, we found that DISTINCT provided sharper control of tough-to-control weeds including Kochia, Round-leaved Mallow and Dandelions, while maintaining maximum rotational freedom," says Joel Johnson, Brand Manager for Western Herbicides at BASF Canada. "For a grower, that's essential."
In 2011, BASF conducted research trials authorized by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency to determine the benefits of DISTINCT. Stewart Valley, SK, pulse grower Glen Seymour took part in the trial by applying DISTINCT with glyphosate in a chemfallow process. For Seymour, eliminating follow crop restrictions was a key feature for DISTINCT.
"It's good that there are no crop restrictions after using it," he says, pointing out the value for his pulse seed operation in particular. "I want to put my highest-producing seed on chemfallow to give me the best option for returns," he says.
As for his view on using DISTINCT in that rotation: "It worked well, and I'd use it again."
