MONTREAL, Aug. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) applauds today's announcement that the federal government is investing $182 million in the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The announcement, which was made by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), in the presence of the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources, and Gilles G. Patry, President and CEO of CFI, is evidence of the government's interest in Canada's knowledge economy.
"This investment in the Leaders Opportunity Fund is excellent news for universities. It also shows that the government is serious about research. We need the means to develop a competitive university network that is capable of meeting our society's expectations and training a qualified, innovative labour force. Today's announcement is a step in that direction," said Denis Brière, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université Laval.
"This financial commitment will allow our universities to attract and retain the best researchers and pursue cutting-edge research. It also means they can offer students the best education and training possible, to help them face the challenges of tomorrow," added Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
