New partnership aims to tackle Toronto's furniture poverty
1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Furniture Bank forge new partnership to help eliminate GTA furniture poverty
TORONTO, April 2, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto launched a solution to help eliminate Toronto's furniture poverty: they're offering all customers the chance to donate their gently used furniture and housewares directly to Furniture Bank upon pick-up. With this initiative, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Furniture Bank hope to restock the charity's warehouse to support as many people as possible — with a goal to double the number of families currently served through the furniture and financial donations they receive.
Furniture poverty is on the rise in the GTA and Furniture Bank has been feeling the pinch. The charity provides people in need with a way to furnish their homes — but they're struggling to keep up with demand.
"In the Toronto area alone, roughly 50,000 people are living in a state of furniture poverty each year," says Dan Kershaw, Executive Director of Furniture Bank. "They can afford the apartment; they have the keys, the lights, the food, and they're making do. But they can't become successful members of society without the furniture required to turn their houses into homes. This is why we exist."
The Furniture Drive is rolling out across the GTA today. With each junk pick-up, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? will separate all gently used furniture and household items, divert them from the landfill, and deliver them directly to Furniture Bank to be repurposed in their clients' homes.
"We're acting as a conduit to give our customers the chance to donate to an important charity," says 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise partner Ashton Lubman. "Furniture Bank has led the way to provide furniture for families in need. Connecting this cause to what we do every day makes sense and can amplify their efforts."
All donations are eligible for a tax deductible receipt based on the fair market value of your items, which usually costs an administrative fee of $100. But if you book your junk pick-up between April 1st and May 31st using promo code FURNITURE50, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? will cover 50% of this cost. All proceeds go to support Furniture Bank's growing operations.
