TORONTO, July 30, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, and His Worship John Tory, Mayor of Toronto, join Mark McQueen, Chairman of PortsToronto, in cutting the ribbon to celebrate the opening of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport's pedestrian tunnel. As of 1:30 P.M. today, the new tunnel will provide the 2.4 million passengers who travel through the airport each year with a more convenient and predictable point of access to the airport.
Measuring 853-feet from the mainland pavilion to the island atrium, the pedestrian tunnel features four moving sidewalks travelling at 2.3 kilometres per hour. From a bank of six elevators in the mainland pavilion, travellers descend 100-feet to access the tunnel and travel along the passageway before ascending to the island atrium and airport's check-in area using one of the longest escalator systems in Canada.
