Lifelong interest in volunteering leads to top position for Dr. Rick Caldwell of New Liskeard, ON
TORONTO, June 3, 2013 /CNW/ - Dr. Rick Caldwell has been installed as President of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), the professional association that represents more than 8,000 dentists in Ontario. His term began on June 1, 2013.
The position is a culmination of a lifelong pursuit of volunteering which began as a boy, when he witnessed his father's ongoing involvement in town politics in New Liskeard, Ont., where his family has roots going back to the early twentieth century.
"It was almost expected of us to become involved and give back to our community wherever possible," says Dr. Caldwell of his family's community work. "Being a member of the ODA has allowed me to combine dentistry and volunteering into a satisfying professional career."
After he graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto, Dr. Caldwell entered a program which sent students to an underserviced area for a year. He took a position as a dentist in the Weeneebayko General Hospital in Moose Factory for two years. Since then, over a period of 20 years, Dr. Caldwell has provided periodic volunteer dental service to the Weenusk First Nations on the Hudson Bay coast, and assisted with relief efforts in Guatemala through Speroway (formerly FTC Canada).
His involvement in organized dentistry began in 1990 at the ODA, where he has served on numerous committees and working groups. Dr. Caldwell also represented the Temiskaming Dental Society at ODA General Council from 2007 to 2009.
"As a dentist, I've benefitted from the ODA's support in helping me deliver quality care to my patients" says Dr. Caldwell. "As President, I now have the opportunity to lead those efforts in support of dentists working to care for patients all across Ontario."
Dr. Caldwell has received a number of awards and scholarships throughout his academic career. He holds memberships in the Health Ministries Association, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists.
He maintains a general practice in New Liskeard and is a staff dentist at Temiskaming Hospital, also in New Liskeard.
