New statistics reveal 10 most common food intolerances
The Hemocode System identifies Canadians' most problematic foods
TORONTO, Dec. 6 /CNW/ - Statistics released today by Gemoscan, owner of Canada's leading food intolerance testing system, Hemocode, revealed that commonly consumed foods such as pork, banana, peanuts and coffee are also the most frequent causes of food intolerances for Canadians.
Although food intolerances are generally non-life threatening, they can still have a tremendous impact on daily life and it is estimated that approximately one-third of Canadians suffer from a food intolerance. Food intolerances often manifest in sleeplessness, sluggishness, bloating, chronic pain, headaches and other lifestyle-limiting conditions which can take hours or days to emerge. Food Intolerances are also impossible to accurately detect and deliver relief from without a blood test.
The Hemocode System assesses which of 250 commonly eaten foods and additives may be responsible for food intolerances. An analysis of 2,000 clients screened between January and October 2010 revealed that the top 10 most common food and additive intolerances include:
1. Pork | 6. Wheat Flour | |||
2. Banana | 7. Coffee | |||
3. Peanut | 8. Cocoa Bean | |||
4. Wheat | 9. Orange | |||
5. Aspartame | 10. Tangerine |
"Everything we eat can elicit a positive or negative reaction. If an individual is intolerant to a certain food and they continue eating it, the immune system will mount an inflammatory reaction, which will make many lifestyle oriented health concerns worse. Once the intolerable food is removed from the diet, the body has a chance to heal and conditions commonly associated with food intolerances begin to disappear," says Dr. Mubina Jiwa, a Naturopathic Doctor and assistant professor at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.
"By learning what foods you are intolerant to and eliminating them from your diet, you are better able to function properly and live a healthier, better balanced lifestyle," said Brian Kalish, Chief Executive Officer of Gemoscan Canada, Inc. "Hemocode takes the guess work out of trying to figure out what foods may limit our ability to lead more productive lifestyles."
