New Study Highlights Importance of Omega-3s to Women's Heart Health
Jamieson's ultra-pure formula offers the best of Omega nutrition
TORONTO, Feb. 1, 2012 /CNW/ - February is Heart Month, and according to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada1, cardiovascular disease causes the death of more Canadian women than all forms of cancer combined. A new study2 from Denmark, however, shows the life-saving value of Omega-3 nutrition in preventing cardiovascular disease in child-bearing women.
Published in the January issue of Hypertension, the Danish study explored the relationship between Omega-3 intake and cardiovascular disease among 49,000 women of reproductive age. The researchers found that "little or no intake" of fish or long-chain Omega-3 essential fatty acids corresponded to an increased risk of heart disease. In one analysis, the researchers found a near three-fold increase in heart-disease risk among women who never ate fish when compared to women who ate fish every week.
"Omega-3 fish oil have long been recognized as an important component of a heart-healthy regime," says Dr. Atle Skattebøl, spokesperson and Chief Medical Officer for EPAX, the world's leader in marine-based Omega nutrition. "This study specifically shows the preventive benefits of Omega-3s for younger women. This is very positive and powerful news. Today, women can benefit from the huge advances made by medical research. Young women, if they choose a heart-healthy lifestyle, may live their entire lives without getting heart disease." Specific Omega-3 oils are known to lower triglyceride levels, reduce inflammation of blood vessels, increase levels of healthy high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and reduce the formation of blood clots that can stick to artery walls. "In the age of polluted waterways, it's not safe to eat all the fish you would need to obtain a therapeutic, nutritionally balanced dose of Omega-3," says Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Sara Henderson from Jamieson Laboratories. "A purified Omega-3 fish oil supplement makes it easy and safe to receive these heart-healthy nutrients every day."
In Canada, only Jamieson Laboratories produces its Omega-3 supplements using ultra-pure EPAX oils in their natural triglyceride form. "For something as important as heart health, you'll get the best results with the purest and most bioavailable products," explains Dr. Skattebøl.
Jamieson's best-selling Omega-3 Heart Health 1,000 mg contains the oil of anchovies and sardines caught in the sustainable fish harvest off the coasts of Peru and Chile where the Southern Pacific and Antarctic oceans meet. "Not only do these small, cold-water species contain naturally high levels of heart-healthy eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)," says Skattebøl, "but as plankton-feeding species, they exhibit far lower levels of contaminants than large fatty fish caught in the North Atlantic."
At EPAX's sophisticated production facility in Norway, the raw materials undergo several distillation processes that concentrate and purify the oils, and remove contaminants, such as PCBs, heavy metals and dioxins. "Our standards for purity are the highest in the world," Skattebøl adds. "Our maximum acceptable level for contaminants is 35 percent lower than the level set by the European Union, and it is well below the threshold set by the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada." The oils are then formulated in the ideal 2:1 ratio of EPA to DHA recommended for heart health.
