New U.S. Sci-Fi/Adventure Series The 100 Will Premiere Only on Netflix in Canada, via Deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution
New Series Will Be Available to Watch Within 24 Hours of U.S. Broadcast Beginning March 20
BEVERLY HILLS and BURBANK, Calif., March 12, 2014 /CNW/ - Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution (WBITD) today announced that the new science fiction adventure series The 100 will be exclusively available to members of Netflix Canada starting Thursday, March 20. The first-run licensing agreement brings The 100 to Netflix members in Canada within 24 hours of the show's U.S. broadcast on The CW Network (Wednesdays 9/8c).
From producers Alloy Entertainment (The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars) and Warner Bros. Television, The 100 brings viewers a unique look at an unrecognizable planet that humanity once called home. Nearly a century after Earth was devastated by a nuclear apocalypse, the fraction of humans left alive have taken refuge in international space stations that were in orbit at the time. Three generations later, the survivors number 4,000 — and resources are running out on their dying "Ark" (the 12 stations now linked together and repurposed to keep the survivors alive). Draconian measures including capital punishment and population control are the order of the day, as the leaders of the Ark take ruthless steps to ensure their future, including secretly exiling a group of a hundred juvenile prisoners to the Earth's surface to test whether it's habitable. No one has set foot on the planet in nearly a century — until now. The alien planet they've never known is a mysterious realm that can be magical one moment and lethal the next. With the survival of the human race entirely in their hands, the hundred must find a way to transcend their differences, unite and forge a new path on a wildly changed Earth that's primitive, intense and teeming with the unknown.
"We know that Canadians love thrilling sci-fi and adventure titles, so The 100 is a great addition to our Canadian service," said Sean Carey, vice president of content acquisition for Netflix. "As a first-run exclusive series, this is the kind of exciting and high-quality multi-genre content we will continue to bring to our members."
"We are pleased to have Netflix as the Canadian home for this series," said Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution. "The 100 is a terrific series, and we believe Netflix will provide a great platform, allowing fans to start from the beginning at the time of their choosing."
The 100 stars Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Thomas McDonell, Canada native Marie Avgeropoulos, Bob Morley, Christopher Larkin, Devon Bostick with Isaiah Washington and Henry Ian Cusick. Elizabeth Craft, Sarah Fain, Jason Rothenberg, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo are executive producers of the series, which was developed by Rothenberg and is based upon the book by Kass Morgan. The 100 is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.
