New wellness centre to provide year-round recreation for residents of Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador Français
PLACENTIA, NL, Dec. 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Investing in recreational infrastructure helps communities come together and stay active. The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador recognize that strategic investments in recreational infrastructure play a key role in supporting dynamic communities while creating good jobs that help grow the middle class.
Today, Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service Newfoundland and Labrador, and Member of the House of Assembly for Placentia-St. Mary's, on behalf of the Honourable Graham Letto, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment; and Bernard Power, Mayor of Placentia, announced over $7.8 million in joint funding for the Placentia Regional Wellness Centre.
The Government of Canada is investing over $2.6 million in this project through the Provincial Territorial Infrastructure Component – National Regional Projects. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing over $3.6 million, with the Town of Placentia providing over $1.5 million.
The project will add a new extension to the existing Unity Parc Arena, expanding the facilities to include a six-lane 25 metre pool, a family pool, fitness room, walking track, and multipurpose event room.
Once completed, the Wellness Centre will offer a variety of fitness and community programming, allowing residents to participate in year-round activities, clubs and social events, while also providing new employment opportunities for youth and community members.

- Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
- $25.3 billion of this funding will support social infrastructure in Canadian communities.
