New York University Professor Wins Prestigious Humanities Award

PALO ALTO, CA, Nov. 16, 2015 /CNW/ - The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) today announced Jonardon Ganeri, Professor of Philosophy at New York University, as the winner of Infosys Prize 2015 in Humanities category. The jury panel, headed by Harvard professor and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, awarded Ganeri for his outstanding scholarship and originality in interpreting and scrutinizing analytical Indian Philosophy and shedding light on shared ground as well as the dichotomy between Indian and Greek traditions of philosophical reasoning.

Of the many classical philosophical traditions in the world, Indian Philosophy stands shoulder to shoulder with the Greek and Chinese traditions in its richness, and Ganeri is the most knowledgeable scholar and interpreter of analytical Indian Philosophy today. He has also brought out the distinction between Indian and Greek traditions of syllogistic reasoning, thereby illuminating both for future generations to enjoy.

Amartya Sen, Thomas W. Lamont University Professor, and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University, is the Jury Chair for the Humanities category. The Infosys Prize, now in its seventh year, recognizes outstanding performance and contribution across six categories: Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences. This is the first year that the Humanities prize is going to a philosopher.
