Of the many classical philosophical traditions in the world, Indian Philosophy stands shoulder to shoulder with the Greek and Chinese traditions in its richness, and Ganeri is the most knowledgeable scholar and interpreter of analytical Indian Philosophy today. He has also brought out the distinction between Indian and Greek traditions of syllogistic reasoning, thereby illuminating both for future generations to enjoy.
Mr. S. D. Shibulal, President, Board of Trustees, Infosys Science Foundation said, "We have seen a decade of great innovations and advancements in science and research, many of which have translated into growth and progress for societies around the world. The Infosys Science Foundation has contributed to this exciting journey through the Infosys Prize - an annual award that honors outstanding scientists and academics. In highlighting their achievements in research, we celebrate the excellent contribution of these remarkable individuals."
"Everyone of our winners has inspired the scientific community and exposed young researchers and students to the joys of scientific enquiry. The jury chairs of each panel evaluate the work of the winners against the backdrop of the best international research, placing the winners at par with the finest researchers the world over."
Amartya Sen, Thomas W. Lamont University Professor, and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University, is the Jury Chair for the Humanities category. Congratulating the winner, Prof. Sen said, "It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Jonardan Ganeri for his major contributions to Indian analytical philosophy, which stands shoulder to shoulder with other analytical traditions like the Greek and the Chinese. But they have often been neglected, partly because of an excessive focus on the religious and mystical aspects of Indian Philosophy. Jonardan Ganeri and his teacher Prof. Bimal Matilal have done an enormous amount of work to bring that heritage to us to make it fresh and a lively part of the Indian intellectual thinking today. I congratulate him with the warmest possible words."
The Infosys Prize, now in its seventh year, recognizes outstanding performance and contribution across six categories: Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences. This is the first year that the Humanities prize is going to a philosopher. The Infosys Prize jury panels are comprised of experts from around the world and benchmarks the work of winners against the best work in the field, globally.
