MONTRÉAL, Jan. 31, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - On April 9, 2018, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) unveiled the premise of its major transformation project, along with the new Musée's preliminary plans, designed by Quebec-based architectural consortium Saucier+Perrotte Architectes/GLCRM & Associés Architectes. With construction work slated to begin in 2019, the project's partners reviewed the schedule presented as part of this announcement after further analysis. The new schedule's details will be announced in the next few months. In the meantime, the MAC is thrilled to announce that it will continue to offer its activities in its current facilities on Sainte-Catherine Street until fall 2020. Until the launch of its next exhibitions in summer 2019, the MAC will continue to offer some of its activities, including the March Break Day Camp, from March 4 to 8, 2019; the SéminArts educational program, which will feature three new series this winter; as well as the Fondation du MAC's events, including the next edition of Les Printemps du MAC in April. The MAC will soon make a more detailed announcement on its summer schedule.
"As we await confirmation for the transformation project's new time frame, we are very excited about the idea of offering visitors a new artistic and educational program as soon as possible. It will be done on a smaller scale, but it will be as interesting and relevant as ever. We will present, for example, pieces from the MAC collection and new acquisitions that we haven't had a chance to exhibit yet," said John Zeppetelli, Director and Chief Curator of the MAC.
In addition, the MAC's reach will extend farther than ever across Canada and abroad in 2019 through three touring exhibitions. The Françoise Sullivan retrospective exhibition, which has just ended its run at the MAC, will begin next March its Canadian tour, in collaboration with two museums in Ontario, namely the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, in Kleinburg, and the Art Gallery, in Windsor. This exhibition will also be featured at the Musée régional de Rimouski and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, in British Columbia.
Leonard Cohen: Une brèche en toute chose/A Crack in Everything will be featured as of April 12, 2019 at the Jewish Museum, in New York. The tour will continue in Copenhagen, in fall 2019, then San Francisco, in 2020.
Lastly, the exhibition dedicated to Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, coproduced with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and featured at the MAC last summer, will be presented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, in Monterrey, Mexico as of August 2019, as well as at the SFMOMA in April 2020. The Rafael Lozano-Hemmer exhibition is also a finalist in this year's edition of the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal.
About the MAC transformation project
This transformation, a major and forward-looking project for the MAC, reflects the Musée's plans to play an increasingly active role in showcasing, sharing and promoting contemporary art from Québec, Canada and abroad. It will enable the MAC to reach its full potential by expanding its exhibition spaces and to offer a wider array of educational activities for all ages. Through this transformation, the MAC plans to reassert its leadership role and convince an ever-growing public of contemporary art's importance in affirming and developing our culture, and its great value to our society.

Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal
The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal makes today's art a vital part of Montréal and Québec life. For more than fifty years, this vibrant museum has brought together local and international artists, their works and an ever-growing public. It is also a place of discovery, offering visitors experiences that are continually changing and new, and often unexpected and stirring. The MAC presents temporary exhibitions devoted to outstanding and relevant current artists who provide their own particular insight into our society, as well as exhibitions of works drawn from the museum's extensive Permanent Collection. These may feature any and every form of expression: digital and sound works, installations, paintings, sculptures, ephemeral pieces, and more. In addition to its wide range of educational activities familiarizing the general public with contemporary art, the MAC organizes unique artistic performances and festive events. It is a window onto a myriad of avant-garde expressions that extend the reach of art throughout the city and beyond. macm.org/en/
