Nighttime Pain Costing Canadians More Than Just Sleep
Sleep loss due to pain causing distraction, frustration and the 3 p.m. crash
TORONTO, March 5, 2012 /CNW/ - Do you find yourself hitting that snooze button more often than you should? Ever dream of actually crawling under your desk and taking a quick afternoon nap? New research shows you're not alone. Canadians from coast-to-coast seem to be running on empty - and sometimes autopilot. Experts are now saying sleep loss due to pain is one of the leading causes of this state of being.
"When we lose sleep due to pain, there are negative consequences the next day such as lowered productivity, difficulty concentrating and not being as mentally present at work and at home," says Dr. Adam Moscovitch, Sleep Medicine Specialist. "The first step to putting sleepless nights behind you is making the connection between your pain and sleep loss and recognizing that there's a problem."
Getting proper sleep should be a priority all year long, but it's more important now than ever. National Sleep Awareness Week runs from March 5th to 11th, and what's more, we all lose an hour of precious sleep next weekend when the clocks go forward for Daylight Savings Time. It's the perfect time for Canadians to put their own tiredness to the test.
The Sleep Doctor is in. On March 8th and 9th, Speak with Dr. Adam Moscovitch (aka the sleep doc) and learn about:
- Sleepless in Ontario - a new online test that Canadians can use to measure their own level of alertness (or lack thereof!)
- A lesson in presenteeism - find out what it really means to be present in body but absent in mind and what this new phenomenon is all about
- Painful new research - that reveals the effects of poor sleep due to pain on Canadians and what types of pain is causing it
- Beyond the 9-to-5 - it's not just those sitting behind a desk. Find out who else suffers from sleep loss and how they pay for it the next day
- The rule of Zzzs - what's the magic number of hours we need to function at our best the next day and what can you do to make sure that you do
