Nine new programs begin 'dramatic' increase in options for students, families
New programs launch in 2013, information nights take place next fall, winter
TORONTO, June 20, 2012 /CNW/ - In September 2013, six new programs will open at the secondary level and three new programs at the elementary level, giving students and their families more options when it comes to their public education in Peel.
"Research tells us quite clearly that students are more engaged in school if they're able to participate in programs that interest them," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "We've heard from our communities that they want more programs and we're committed to dramatically increasing the options we provide to families—we want to give students and their families the opportunity to create their own pathways to success."
Information nights for all Regional Learning Choices Programs start this fall. The new programs include:
Brampton
Centennial Senior Public School - SciTech
Central Peel Secondary School - Advanced Placement and Strings programs
Williams Parkway Senior Public School - International Business and Technology
Mississauga
Applewood Heights Secondary School - Sports
Glenforest Secondary School - Middle Years International Baccalaureate
Lisgar Middle School - International Business and Technology
Meadowvale Secondary School - International Business and Technology
TL Kennedy Secondary School - International Executive Leadership Academy
The Peel board conducted a series of focus groups and a survey during the summer and fall of 2011. The results of this survey indicated a wide variety of interests from parents, students and teachers, with the main focus being on programs that support future education and career choices. Programs with a business, science or technology focus had a strong appeal.
