COUNTRY HARBOUR, GUYSBOROUGH COUNTY, NS, May 17, 2019 /CNW/ - Investing in public infrastructure supports efficient sustainable transportation services that help Canadians and their families get to work, school and essential services on time and back home safely at the end of a long day.
Today, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Rural Economic Development, and the Honourable Lloyd Hines, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, announced support for two new ferry replacement projects in Nova Scotia.
The Little Narrows Ferry in Cape Breton, and the Country Harbour Ferry in Guysborough County will both be replaced by a cable ferry that can carry 15 cars, increasing passenger capacity, and improving overall operational efficiency. The new ferries will have improved mechanical systems and engines, ensuring that ferry services remain in operation for years to come.
The improved Little Narrows Ferry will maintain important transportation links to Baddeck and Sydney, and act as a major travel route for tourists and bus tours visiting the region for Celtic Colours and the Nova Scotia Mi'kmaw Summer Games.
The Country Harbour Ferry will be improved to provide more efficient service in the surrounding areas, shortening travel times for many workers and emergency vehicles. Once in operation, the new ferries will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia are each contributing up to $6 million towards these projects through the Rural and Northern Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan.
