Canadian Media Guild data shows 10,000 job losses in past five years

The print sector lost nearly twice as many jobs as the broadcast sector—6,000 jobs versus 3,700, according to the Canadian Media Guild's preliminary data. Jan Wong summarizes all the recent cuts, cost-saving initiatives and other measures the industry is making to stop the financial bleeding. 

J-Source launches new Work and Labour section

Nicole Cohen, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga and co-founder of Shameless magazine, will edit the section dedicated to coverage of contract negotiations, internships, freelancing, outsourcing and layoffs in Canadian journalism. The first contribution to the Work and Labour section comes from well-known author and magazine writer Ann Douglas, who writes about ending her long-running column in the Toronto Star after being presented with a new, non-negotiable freelance agreement.

Calgary Herald ceases in-house print production, marks "end of an era"

As the Calgary Herald moves to a full-colour and slimmer print format this week, editor-in-chief Lorne Motley calls the move from in-house production the "end of an era." The Herald's parent company, Postmedia Network, put the newspaper's printing facility on the market and outsourced production to TC Transcontinental Printing.  J-Source associate editor Tamara Baluja reports.
