If you build it, will they pay?
The New York Times may be reporting moderate success with its latest attempt at a paywall but, well, it's The New York Times. If Canadian newspapers implementing paywalls — such as Postmedia's The Ottawa Citizen and The Globe and Mail — are to succeed, there's a few things they're going to have to do, according to Jeff Fraser.

THE BIG ISSUE
On covering the Montreal student protests
The Quebec student protests against rising tuition fees have been covered around the world, with extensive coverage in Canada as well, including regular news coverage, features, opinion pieces and viral videos. The CBC even created an in-depth, interactive timeline on its website.
Being a journalist covering the protests has been frustrating, and at times, dangerous. Journalists reported being intimidated and bullied by police, the victims of police and protester violence, and some have even been arrested. Student journalists face many issues due to the mere fact that they don't have a press card but agree that though covering the protests has been difficult, they have an advantage, as they themselves, are students.
But now, with talks between student groups and the Quebec government moved behind closed doors, the nightly protests may be getting a little stale.
It may seem that the Montreal student protests have been covered from every angle in every Canadian city, but Bilbo Poynter says for This Magazine that there are definitely things the media has missed.

TOWN HALL
To the editors who say advertorials are "a fact of life" and "it's too cut and dried to say 'avoid advertorials,'" they're only a fact of life because journalists have allowed them to be. If the industry would draw the advertising line at advertisements, advertisers would not expect advertorials. WE let it happen - WE make the norm - WE are not innocent bystanders.
