TORONTO
,
Nov. 25
/CNW/ - Today, Terry McQuay, President of Nymity, delivers what is likely the first university lecture in the world on the new International Standards on the Protection of Personal Data and Privacy, also called 'The
Madrid
Resolution'. The standard was announced on
November 6th, 2009
in
Madrid
, at the Annual 31st International Conferences of Data Protection and was welcomed by Protection Authorities of 50 countries. Most notably the resolution speaks to: (1) privacy as a fundamental human right, (2) the requirement of organizations to follow fair information practice principles, (3) the need for states to create supervisory authorities for data protection that shall be impartial and independent, which will have technical competence, sufficient powers and adequate resources, (4) international data transfers and (5) accountability.
In light of the
Madrid
Resolution, Terry rewrote his international privacy lecture to address this new standard and draw comparison to other privacy standards globally. Terry commented, "After the
Madrid
conference, I was sitting in the airport reading the new standards and realized it was a great framework to introduce international privacy." He added that "the new standard was very similar to Canada's private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) which I have been training organizations on since 2003."
Avner Levin, Director of Ryerson's Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute, stated that "Ryerson University strives to provide its students with the most recent and relevant knowledge that they can apply to their education and their career. We are fortunate to be able to work with Nymity, the world leader in privacy compliance and risk management research, and provide our students with the benefits of Nymity's knowledge and expertise."
